The Hummer H1, produced by AM General from 1992 to 2006, is a civilian off-road vehicle based on the Humvee M998. This is the original Hummer model that would later expand into a broader range of vehicles.
Designed originally for the military, popular demand saw the four-wheel-drive utility released on the civilian market. Many combinations of the H1 were available, including five engine options and three automatic transmissions. Body styles were also diverse and range from soft top, hardtop utility and Alpha wagon to less-common ones such as two-door pickup and four-door slantback.
Produced on the same assembly line as the Humvee, the H1 also shares numerous parts from its military cousin, including the frame, major body panels, brakes and axles. Renowned for its off-road capabilities, the wide-track H1 also features innovations such as a tire inflation system, where the driver can hit a switch to reduce tyre pressure for off-road use or increase it for highway conditions.
