The 280SE 3.5 is a luxury grand tourer produced only briefly by Mercedes Benz from 1969 to 1971. Originally introduced in 1967, the 280 SE with 2778 cc engine was upgraded two years later to a new 3499 V8 unit, hence the 3.5 designation. Only 3,270 coupe and 1,232 cabriolet examples were ever built during its very short production run, making the V8 examples, like the one featured here, very rare and highly collectible.
One of the quickest Mercedes models of the era, this well engineered and relatively heavy series benefitted greatly from the improved 230 hp engine found in the later V8 versions. The result is smooth acceleration to high speed with little mechanical exertion and resulting noise. Other engineering refinements include independent suspension, four-speed automatic transmission and all round hydraulic disc brakes.
Interior comforts include leather upholstery, air conditioning, electric windows and stereo radio as standard. This vehicle is housed in Dubai, United Arab Emirates as part of a Classic Car Collection.
