The 280 SEC, using the internal Mercedes chassis number W111, was the top range model of four-door sedans until 1968 and two-door coupes and cabriolets until 1971. Powered by six-cylinder engines driving the rear wheels, the 280 example featured here is a later model boasting the more powerful 2778 cc straight-six unit.
Passenger comfort and safety were the major design points focused on and an enlarged area of glass provided for improved driver visibility. Renowned for their reliability and smooth ride qualities, the 280 series had a very stylish appearance and an open and spacious interior.
With the power now boosted to 160 hp, this series had become effortless cruisers capable of long-distance motoring in relative style and comfort. Although quite heavy in their construction, the 280 series were very popular despite their trade off of comfortable motoring for outright performance.
